Google will try to steal the Thunder from Apple's Content Service Event with a Major Gaming Platform Announcement on March 19
Apple's big flashy event scheduled for March 25th to finally unveil their new content streaming service was announced on Monday and we added the breaking news to our report on Apple hiring director Taika Waititi for a new 'Time Bandits' series. Since then Spotify has announced a streaming music and Hulu content offer for premium accounts and now Google has announced that on March 19 they'll be unveiling their new online gaming platform that was originally dubbed Project Stream. Did Google want to ensure that they got the spotlight ahead of Apple's big event?
Back in January Patently Apple covered a part of AMD's first Keynote at CES pertaining to the news that AMD was a server partner with Google on Project Stream, a new online gaming platform capable of delivering 1080p at 60fps quality on top of the line gaming titles like Assassins Creed Odyssey as pictured below.
Google's event is bound to have the attention of every serious gamer on the planet to hear about the new service and perhaps get a better sense of timing, pricing and where the platform could be going in terms of content beyond gaming and 5G connectivity for gamers.
It just so happens that Patently Mobile and Patently Apple were first to uncover a game controller patent from Google this week that had been in the works for at least five years. Whether Google decides to sell a gaming controller as an accessory right out of the gate is unknown at this time, but the controller offered a unique Google Assistant button on the face side of the controller as noted below that could be a distinguishing feature.
Google is expected to announce their new streaming game service at a press event during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on March 19 as noted below. The YouTube page notes: "Gather around as we unveil Google’s vision for the future of gaming at #GDC19." The YouTube announcement will go live on March 19 using the video link below.
Of course Google won't be alone in this market. Microsoft will be taking preorders for their new all-digital Xbox One S in April trying to capture the 5G crowd for gaming anywhere, anytime and others are bound to make similar announcements soon.
Yet Google getting into this market is the surprise player and with their reach, including cheap Chromebooks offering the service, it's going to be a market shaking moment you shouldn't miss.
