Apple may Adopt Samsung's 'Touch-Integrated' Displays and Possibly add BOE to their OLED Supply Chain

In an interesting Korean tech report posted today we learn that Apple "plans to adopt Samsung’s touch-integrated OLED displays into its high-end iPhones. The company has stuck to a display installed with a separate TSP on top since the first iPhone in 2007. In recent months, however, the iPhone maker has been mulling to deploy Samsung’s OLED display featuring the TSP inside, which can make a mobile device thinner and lighter."

Over the past few years there have been a number of rumors of Apple considering China's BOE for future OLED display orders (01, 02, 03 & 04). Getting into Apple's supply chain for something as important as iPhone displays takes time because it requires a series of tests to be completed before Apple can be assured that deliverable quality can be shipped on time.

So far Samsung has had a lock on Apple's OLED supply and it's probably why Samsung has been attempting to lure Apple to choose their new touch-integrated displays as a way to retain Apple's business.

Yet the Korean report suggests that BOE is capable of delivering a similar type of OLED display to Apple so as to at least be considered as a secondary OLED supplier.

The report further added that "BOE, which ran what is called an L6 project to become a supplier for Apple last year, is now proceeding with its L7 project to provide displays for the US firm."

BOE's L6 project landed Huawei as a customer and they became the supplier for the foldable OLED displays found in Huawei's Mate X smartphone unveiled last month at MWC 2019.
