Apple Supplier Compal Confirms Contracts for Apple Watch 4, new iPad mini and Reactivation of it's Vietnam Plant in March

18.5 supply chain report

In October 2018 Apple supplier GoerTek was the first to announce that they would move their AirPod Plant to Vietnam to avoid the escalating US-China trade dispute. In December Patently Apple reported that other Apple suppliers were considering setting up manufacturing facilities in Vietnam for the same reasons and today we're learning today that the next to join the bandwagon to Vietnam is Compal.

A Digitimes report claims that "Taiwan ODM Compal Electronics is actively proceeding with capacity expansions in China, Taiwan and Vietnam." Compal said it will reactivate its plant in northern Vietnam in March 2019.

Aside from their talk of production expansion in Vietnam, Compal's CEO Wong said he expects Compal's non-PC shipments for 2019 to see double-digit growth from 2018's 40 million units, with shipments of wearable devices, in particular, to grow sharply.

Wong noted that Compal had landed contract production orders for the Apple Watch Series 4.

Compal is now also among major contract producers of Apple's iPads, and is expected to ramp up its iPad shipments after Apple releases iPad Mini models later in 2019, the sources added.

The timing of the iPad statement supports yesterday's rumor about a lower-cost iPad and a new iPad mini this spring.
