It's being reported today that a worker is dead and two injured after toxic gas leaked at the Samsung Electronics plant in Giheung, south of Seoul, according to the local police at the site.

The accident happened at 3:40 p.m. in a section of the first basement packed with fire extinguishing equipment. Leaked Co2 from the equipment is said to have caused the accident.

A worker, 24, surnamed Lee, was found dead and two others were unconscious when rescue workers reached the scene. The dead and injured workers were from an outside contractor and not on Samsung's payroll, according to reports.

The injured workers were taken to hospital, but their condition was not immediately known.

The equipment is designed to put out fires by emitting carbon dioxide, which lowers the level of oxygen in a room and deprives the fire of the oxygen it needs to continue burning. Samsung believes a carbon dioxide leak occurred while the workers were inspecting the equipment.

Samsung expressed regret as an investigation has begun.
