Qualcomm's new 2Gbps LTE modem is an important step toward 5G. Today Qualcomm announced its newest LTE modem for smartphones ahead of Mobile World Congress. The Snapdragon X24 promises to reach top download speeds of up to 2Gbps.

As the industry moves towards delivering 5G networks and smartphone modems in 2019, the new Snapdragon X24 LTE modem's promise to deliver fiber-like Internet speeds delivered wirelessly. The new modems carrying Qualcomm's Snapdragon X24 LTE from Ericsson, Telstra and NETGEAR will offer consumers incredible mobile experiences such as immersive 360-degree video, connected cloud computing, rich entertainment and instant apps. At the same time, operators can gain flexibility in using their spectrum assets to offer blazing fast speeds to consumers, while also improving their network capacity and maximizing spectral efficiency.

Serge Willenegger, Qualcomm's wireless SVP and general manager stated that "the World's first announced Gigabit LTE modem will achieve speeds of up to 2 Gbps. The Snapdragon X24 LTE modem sets a major mobile industry milestone, designed to provide enhanced mobile broadband and deliver an extremely important gigabit coverage layer for commercial 5G networks and mobile devices that are expected to start launching in 2019." Yesterday Patently Apple posted a report titled "Samsung's new S9 will introduce the LTE Gigabit Era." The report noted that the "Galaxy S9 will realize a telecommunication speed of up to one Gbps. At this speed, you can download a 1GB movie or receive 250 4MB MP3 songs in eight seconds."
