The First Implementable 5G Specification has been Approved Opening the Door for Deployments in 2019

Earlier today Patently Apple posted a report titled "Morgan Stanley Claims iPhone X is a Hit in China while a new Rumor Points to Apple Prototyping Pre-5G Features." That part of the news is now greatly enhanced by the news that the finalization of the 3GPP Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR) Standard was announced in Lisbon, Portugal over the last 24 hours.

Intel notes that "With NSA 5G NR, players across the ecosystem for the first time have rallied around a single internationally recognized specification for 5G radio systems. It provides the technological foundation for the industry to begin testing and commercializing the next generation of wireless services and devices.

The Official Press Release from the global mobile industry leaders is presented below. The press release notes that "the completion of the first 5G NR standard has set the stage for the global mobile industry to start full-scale development of 5G NR for large-scale trials and commercial deployments as early as in 2019.

Vice President, Client and Internet of Things Businesses and Systems Architecture, Asha R. Keddy, stated today that "Intel is proud to have contributed to the development of NSA 5G NR with proprietary research, reference designs and insights from a range of trials.

Intel's many contributions spanned the specification, including coding, error correction, modulation, spatial sub-channelization, beamforming, reference symbol designs, radio link adaptation and more. Intel also produced prototypes for use in the testing of pre-5G standards, including 5GTF.

Those system stacks were, in essence, the parents of NSA and SA 5G NR – providing evidence of what was possible and informing the standard's specifications. During this process, we collaborated with industry innovators like Ericsson and Nokia, and leading operators like AT&T, Korea Telecom, NTT Docomo and Verizon."

In November Patently Apple posted a report titled "The new 5G Modems from Intel that Apple may adopt over time to Replace Qualcomm Modems have just been announced."

Considering that the next iPhone will debut in Q4 2018, Apple may future-proof it with a hybrid 5G modem of sorts. Of course it's speculation, but with the announcement today that the 5G specification is complete, it would only make sense for such a scenario to play out. Though with all new technology, only time will tell how it materializes.
