The new 5G Modems from Intel that Apple may adopt over time to Replace Qualcomm Modems have just been announced

On October 31st Patently Apple posted a report titled "Apple Set to Design 2018 iDevices without Qualcomm Modems," followed by a November 2nd report titled "Qualcomm Sues Apple for Providing Intel with their source code to Assist Intel's Future modems for iDevices." With Qualcomm knowing that they'll be losing their modem business from Apple they struck out to sue Apple. Today, Intel proudly announced it's 5G modem business road map.


Earlier today Intel announced substantial advances in its wireless product road map to accelerate the adoption of 5G. Highlights include the introduction of the Intel® XMM™ 8000 series, Intel's first family of 5G new radio (5G NR) multi-mode commercial modems, and Intel's latest LTE modem, the Intel® XMM™ 7660. Intel also announced it has successfully completed a full end-to-end 5G call based on its early 5G silicon, the Intel® 5G Modem – a key milestone in its development. Finally, the Intel® XMM™ 7560 modem unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2017 has achieved gigabit-class speeds.


Intel said that it has successfully made a 5G phone call based on its early prototypes, and its Intel XMM 7560 chip has reached gigabit-class speeds. Intel's chips will hit the market in 2019, and broad deployment of 5G service is expected in 2020.
