As the AI revolution takes off, Microsoft wants to leapfrog the industry with their secret twelve year project that will empower scalable quantum computing and ignite the quantum revolution. Yesterday Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella positioned quantum computing as one of three nascent technologies crucial to Microsoft's future. The others are artificial intelligence, where Microsoft like rivals has begun investing heavily, and augmented reality, where Microsoft is developing the HoloLens headset.

According to Microsoft, quantum computing takes a giant leap forward from today's technology—one that will forever alter our economic, industrial, academic, and societal landscape.

In just hours or days, a quantum computer can solve complex problems that would otherwise take billions of years for classical computing to solve. This has massive implications for research in healthcare, energy, environmental systems, smart materials, and more.

The quantum economy is coming. And Microsoft envisions a future where customers use their Azure cloud platform for both classical and quantum computing.
