Samsung's Digital Assistant Bixby Finally Available in English for U.S. Customers

It's being reported in South Korea today that Samsung Electronics has released the English-language version of the Bixby voice assistant in the United States market. American users of Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus models can start using Bixby's voice service immediately by updating the application to the latest software version.

Voice capabilities for Bixby can be activated by pushing a dedicated button on the side of the phone or by simply saying "Hi, Bixby."

The artificial intelligence (AI) assistant's voice capabilities are now available in Korean and English on the Galaxy S8. Korean users can also enjoy the English variant of Bixby after changing their language settings to English.

Today's announcement will likely mean that Samsung will be able to unveil the next-gen Galaxy Note 8 on August 23 with Bixby ready to be activated.

Rhee In-jong, head of Samsung's R&D for software and services went on record by stating, "At Samsung, we are dedicated to creating the best possible user experience for our customers. That's why we designed Bixby with its intelligent interface to allow you to do more things with your phone. We want to offer a truly multimodal experience, so users can interact with their phones in many different ways. And as the Bixby ecosystem grows, it will use its completeness, context awareness and cognitive tolerance to evolve from a smartphone interface to the interface for your life."

Samsung expects Bixby will be a strong competitor to Apple's Siri, Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. Thanks to its deep-learning technology, Bixby will learn users' speaking habits as well as other information to provide them with accurate voice assistance, according to Samsung.

Samsung said Bixby will be fully integrated across core Samsung apps, so users can do almost anything with their voice, including multi-step and cross-app requests.
