Huawei Director in India Spreads Fake News that they overtook Apple in Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2016
In February Strategy Analytics posted statistics for smartphones for Q4 2016. Apple was technically in first place inching out Samsung as the statistics prove out below, even though they were physically listed as second place as noted in their chart. Huawei was clearly in third spot, falling behind Apple by a wide margin. Today in a report in India's 'The Economic Times,' Huawei's Indian Director for Product Centre Allen Wang went on record with fake news that they overtook Apple in global sales in smartphones in Q4 2016.
Mr. Wang stated that Huawei's share in December 2016 reached 13.2% whereas Apple only reached 12%. Wang further claimed that they shipped 139 million smartphones last year. Yet the chart above shows Apple shipping over 215 million units for 2016 with a 17.8% share in Q4.
While Mr. Wang didn't quote any source for his miraculous private numbers such as IDC, Gartner or other. No, today was just a Fake News day thinking his comments would be limited to India. Today Android Authority repeated this Fake News.
Unless The Economic Times makes a formal retraction by saying that they got the story wrong in some major way, it'll remain on record as Fake News.
