Apple Working on a Future Hand Gesturing Interface to Control Gaming, Apple TV and Home Appliances

Last week Patently Apple posted a report titled "Apple invents a 3D Depth Mapping Camera for Hand Gesturing Interfaces for Future Macs & Smartglasses." It's a recurring theme (one, two and three) from Apple's PrimeSense team from Israel. Today another such patent filing has surfaced titled "Gesture based User Interface," based on hand gestures. The system is designed to work with a wide range of applications and devices including a game console, set top boxes (Apple TV), a television, home appliances and kitchen appliances. Apple's patent FIG. 1 illustrated below is a block diagram of a control system based on identifying hand gestures. As we noted in last week's patent report, hand gesturing could also apply to controlling a future headset.

The lead engineer listed on the patent worked for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and PrimeSense as an applications/UX prototyping engineer team leader. At Apple he's in charge of creative exploration of possible new user interfaces and use cases made possible with emerging technologies.

Apple's patent application 20170185161 was filed back in Q1 2017. For more details about this invention, click here. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
