Apple Wins 62 Patents Today Covering a Detailed 'Maps' Invention Regarding Roof Types, Several Apple Watch Bands & More

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 62 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today. In this particular report we cover a detailed invention regarding Apple Maps and in particular, identifying rooftops. Apple was also granted a series of design wins for Apple Watch Bands. We wrap up this week's granted patent report with our traditional listing of the remaining granted patents that were issued to Apple today.

Granted Patent: Identifying and Parameterizing Roof Types in Map Data

How detailed do Apple's Maps get? In-part we learn the answer to that in Apple's newly granted patent 9,582,932. Apple's patent relating to methods and apparatus for a roof analysis tool for constructing a parameter set, where the parameter set is derived from mapping data for a map region, and where the parameter set describes the roofs for the buildings within the map region.

In some cases, the parameter set includes a list of roof type identification values and the respective buildings in the map region for which a given roof type identification value corresponds. The roof analysis tool may operate on a server and work in conjunction with a mobile device, where the mobile device may display map views of a map region such that the map view is based on a three-dimensional model of the map region, and where a portion of the three-dimensional model is based on data generated on the mobile device and a portion of the three-dimensional model is based on data generated on the server.

The depiction in patent FIG. 5A above may be from a raster image taken, for example, from a satellite or helicopter. The photographic detail may provide a user with a general impression of the map area; FIG. 6A illustrates one representation of data used by a roof analysis tool; and FIG. 7 illustrates a non-exhaustive list of example roof types.
