At the Display Week conference in San Francisco this week, Samsung made a big splash in presenting a rather interesting high resolution 4K screen for a future generation smartphone for their Gear VR. Specifically, Samsung presented a 5.5-inch 4K VR smartphone display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 with pixel density of 860 ppi. At present both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive feature a little over 2K display with a pixel resolution of 2160 x 1200. But in the end, it's perhaps the video presented above that makes you understand the buzz. It's like seeing 3D without any special glasses; something that could very well be a killer app for Samsung if they ever get it to market in a timely manner. In many ways it very much reminds me of HoloToy for iOS.

This has been on Samsung's mind for some time. Last year we posted a Samsung IP report titled "Samsung Invents a Unique 3D Film Overlay for Smartphones so that users could watch 3D Movies or Games without 3D Glasses."

In a 2015 Patently Apple IP report titled "Apple Invents Spatially Interactive 2D/3D Displays" we covered Apple's invention that discussed an advanced display showing 3D-like images without the need for specialty glasses.

While the race is now on to see who'll deliver a 3D-like display to market first, Samsung is likely to win. Yet the good news for consumers is that this is a trend that looks like it's going become a reality in the not-too-distant future.
