Intel has Reportedly Won Apple's Modem Chip Business for the iPhone 7
Last year we posted a report titled "Intel's One-Time Secret Modem Project may be Headed for the iPhone 7 and Beyond." Then last month we posted a follow-up report titled "Could Qualcomm's Possible Loss of Apple's iPhone Modem Business be Intel's Gain?" The answer to that question appears to be yes. A new supply chain report today states that "Intel will supply up to 50% of the modem chips for use in the new iPhones slated for launch in September 2016.
The report further noted that "Intel will itself package the modem chips for the upcoming new iPhones, but have contracted Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and tester King Yuan Electronics (KYEC) to manufacture the chips, the sources said." At the end of the day, if true, Qualcomm's fears have come to pass.
