Apple Patent Shows Ongoing Work to Improve our Audio Speaker Experience

Today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple titled "Audio Speaker Surround Geometry for Improved Pistonic Motion" that reveals improved audio speakers and audio speaker suspension systems. Apple's new speaker system will prevent rub and buzz, sound distortion, and speaker failure issues that can arise with traditional speaker surrounds. Unless you're an audio engineer, you won't be able to really appreciate the depth of detail assigned to this invention. Yet as a consumer, you can always appreciate that Jony Ive and his industrial design team are constantly out to improve our iDevice experience.

 

In Apple's patent FIG. 1 noted below were' able to see a perspective cutaway view of an audio speaker and in patent FIG. 4 we're able to see a schematic view depicting various modes of motion of an audio speaker including pistonic motion.

For more details, see Apple's patent application 20160080870 that was originally filed in Q2 2014. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
