LG Wins a Design Patent for a Smartphone with a Two-Sided Wraparound Display
Earlier this month LG was granted a design patent for a possible future smartphone that will offer consumers a two sided wraparound display with rounded edges. The market is definitely looking for a smartphone design that will finally break away from the pack and LG's design just might fit the bill. Of course they'll need to have their software intelligently use the sides and backside of the display so as to make it compelling for consumers. Whether LG has the savviness to pull this off and make it a market winner is unknown at this time. At the moment, LG's only known competition that has a patent regarding a smartphone with a wraparound display is in fact Apple. They were granted a full utility patent back in September 2015 which goes far beyond a mere design patent. Apple first filed for their invention back in March 2013.
Below you'll find LG's Patent figure 6 which illustrates the backside of the display design. To see the face side of the design, see our original Patently Mobile LG patent report here.
