In late September we posted a report titled "Apple's CEO Met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss an iPhone Plant and Apple Pay." We had noted earlier in September that India could be Apple's next mass market for the iPhone with Foxconn wheeling and dealing to get an iPhone plant up and running in that country.
Today, Apple is changing things up a bit in the Indian market by partnering with Vodafone, Airtel for the official iPhone Launch in India next Friday, October 16.
India's Economic Times is reporting today that Apple, for the very first time, has forged partnerships with the telcos well in advance of the launch planned for October 16. Previously, operator plans came out months later."
The tie-ups and offers, as well as the move to start selling in India much earlier that it usually does after a global launch, underscore the growing importance of India, which is set to overtake the US as the world's second-largest smartphone market by 2017.
