Apple's iPhone's Global Market Share Grew 2.7% Year-over-Year if not More
A new statistical report published by StrategyAnalytics today noted that global mobile phone shipments Global mobile phone shipments grew a lackluster 2 percent annually from 428.0 million units in Q2 2014 to 434.6 million in Q2 2015. Smartphones accounted for 8 in 10 of total mobile phone shipments during the quarter. The 2 percent growth rate of the overall mobile phone market is the industry's weakest performance for two years, due to slowing demand for handsets in China, Europe and the US. And yet with that statement made, Apple's CEO Tim Cook noted during their latest Financial Conference Call that Apple had another stellar quarter for iPhone sales establishing a new June Quarter record. Apple's iPhone unit sales grew 35% which is almost 3X the rate of growth of the smartphone market overall and gained share in all of their geographic segments. And a lot of Apple's growth was in China. And so the report should have noted in its opening summary that Apple ate everyone's lunch this quarter in China with robust high-end smartphone sales.
StrategyAnalytics noted that "Samsung dipped 7 percent annually and shipped 89.0 million mobile phones worldwide, capturing 20 percent market share in Q2 2015. Samsung has stabilized volumes in the high-end, but its lower-tier mobile phones continue to face intense competition from rivals such as Huawei in Asia."
Further into the report StrategyAnalytics did in fact note that Apple grew 35 percent annually and shipped 47.5 million mobile phones for 11 percent worldwide market share in Q2 2015. Apple outperformed as consumers in China and elsewhere upgraded to bigger-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models." They just didn't give Apple any credit for that stellar growth in their opening summary.
It should also be noted that Apple doesn't sell "mobile phones" or "feature phones" that are tossed into the stats noted below. If the stats were on smartphones alone, Samsung's market share would likely be lower than noted.

StrategyAnalytics notes at the bottom of their report that "The term "Mobile Phone" is defined as smartphones plus feature phones combined." Translation, removing Apple's competitors "feature phone" shipments and only counting smartphones would have given Apple a greater market share number.
