Apple May be Investigating a Satellite Service from Boeing for Future Apple TV & Beyond
We just posted a report titled "Rumor Hints that this could be the Year of Apple TV," and one of the points made was that some of Apple's new TV channels have been rather local. For instance, Apple TV consumers in the U.S. will get HBO Now next month – but Canada and likely most of the world, won't. So how could Apple take Apple TV to the next level? Offer the new Apple TV bundles on a new satellite service and bypass the cable companies. A new report published today provides us with a little hope that this could become a reality.
Yesterday Boeing said it could clinch a deal this year to build a high-throughput communications satellite for top technology companies such as Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook and others. It's not too farfetched considering that Apple has a patent regarding a satellite phone that could apply to TV.
According to Jim Simpson, vice president of business development and chief strategist for Boeing Network and Space Systems, the big technology firms were keen to expand Internet access around the world to help them grow.
Simpson added that "The real key to being able to do these type of things is ultra-high-throughput capabilities, where we're looking at providing gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes of capability."
Simpson declined to give specific details about discussions with the tech companies at this time. Read the Reuters full report here for more details.
