Apple has reportedly acquired FoundationDB, a company that specializes in speedy, durable NoSQL databases. FoundationDB's mission was to provide data storage technology that frees engineers and companies to focus on problems other than building their data stack. To that end, FoundationDB had created a new generation of database technology that combines the advantages of modern NoSQL databases with the power and reliability of ACID transactions.

Before the site disappears, check it out here. The news of Apple's acquisition came via TechCrunch who assumes that "this was an acquisition designed to bolster Apple's server-side technologies for the App Store, iTunes Connect or iTunes in the Cloud."

However, due to the Apple-IBM alliance and their MobileFirst enterprise collaboration, the new database may have other purposes down the road including finding a possible future FileMaker application or tool.
