Samsung Advances their Next-Gen Phone-Watch Invention
Samsung first introduced their vision for a next generation phone-watch in September 2013, roughly seven months after Apple's invention was first made public by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Since that time a second phone-watch patent surfaced from Samsung that added wrist-motion commands and now a third patent for this device has surfaced describing various new refinements. You can review our full Patently Mobile report on Samsung's latest invention here if you happen to like knowing what the competition is up to.
With the launch of Apple Watch in April, it's likely that the larger flex display styled smartwatches with integrated telephony are years away from both camps. Who will strike first with such an advanced smartwatch is clearly unknown at this time but I'll certainly be one cheering them on.
For many, if not most, Apple's traditional styled smartwatch designs will attractive those who love watches to begin with as a jewelry accessory. This market is a mass market developed primarily by the Swiss and Apple wants to tap into that massive pool of users who want style and smarts to go along with it, like the Apple Pay feature.
I, along with the minority, will patiently wait until the display and functionality make sense in a much larger form factor (a watch and not a bangle). I never took to a watch with a tiny interface, so Apple's first generation watches will do nothing for me anytime soon.
Remember, I'm an iPhone 6 Plus customer who loves large displays. I pounded the table for an Apple Phablet back in 2013 when most in the Apple community thought that would only happen when pigs could fly. So if I thought the 4 inch iPhone display was useless for me, then the thought of yet a tinier screen on my wrist is simply a bore that will never fly.
Yet to each their own of course and I'm sure that Apple Watch will sell extremely well into Apple's fan base enthusiastically and catch on like fire with professional women who will be falling over themselves to get their hands on Apple's Gold versions of Apple Watch. Well, at least those that love jewelry to begin with.
For now, Apple Watch is only about 70 days away and it'll be another historic day for Apple as their next new iDevice rolls into the marketplace.
