LG Uplus under Attack for their Excessive iPhone 6 Marketing
The Korean press reported earlier today that LG Uplus, the nation's smallest mobile carrier, has come under attack for its "excessive" marketing strategy in its bid to sell more Apple iPhones. Apple's iPhone 6 pre-orders have sold exceedingly well in Korea which has made one particular Apple partner a little more agressive than they should have.
Unlike KT and SK Telecom, which have been selling iPhones in South Korea since 2009, the LG Group telecom unit has only just begun selling Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. LG had been blocked from providing wireless services for Apple devices due to differences over radio frequencies.
"LG Uplus said in its homepage that it is the only local carrier to provide VoLTE service in iPhones, and added SK Telecom and KT customers should visit customers' centers to utilize VoLTE in iPhones. That notification was suddenly corrected due to a request by Apple as this is against the facts and also taints Apple's corporate image."
"Apple asked LG Uplus to immediately correct its excessive marketing to sell more iPhones since LG began taking orders for the two Apple devices," an LG official said on condition of anonymity.
An official at the Yongsan Electronics Market stated that "I have no option but to follow orders from Uplus' marketing personnel to promote more iPhones within the LG networks. I have to admit that Uplus has been consistent in making noises by blaming others and overly highlighting its networks since it has begun taking pre-orders."
