Apple's CEO Tells China News Agency, Apple Pay is top Priority
Tim Cook Focused on Apple Pay Services in China: We previously reported this week that Apple's CEO had attended a top level meeting in China over security. Today, speaking with Xinhua, China's official news agency, Cook confirmed that he had "very open" talks on privacy and security. Yet Cook's top priority on his trip to China was to find out how to fast track "Apple Pay" services in China.
In the interview, Cook said one of Apple's priorities for China was to introduce the newly launched Apple Pay mobile payments service, and that he was still seeking to understand the steps needed to do so.
Cook added that "China is a really key market for us. Everything we do, we are going to work it here. Apple Pay is on the top of the list."
Chinese media had reported last month that Apple was close to a deal with China's UnionPay card network to launch Apple Pay in the world's most populous country. However, we reported on the deal as far back as May.
Reuters noted that Cook, on a four day trip to China, attended a meeting of the advisory board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management on Friday. He had also toured a Foxconn factory making the iPhone which we covered yesterday.
