Foxconn Aggressively Assisting Xiaomi in Smartphone War
In May of last year we reported that Hon Hai (Foxconn) had undergone its worst financial quarter since 2005. While Windows 8 turned out to being a disaster hurting PC orders at that time, Apple's shift to splitting orders between Foxconn and Pegatron was likely the number one factor in Hon Hai's disastrous quarter. Now a new report is out that is claiming that Foxconn is focusing on supporting Apple's competitors such as Xiaomi and others.
A report published this morning in Taiwan is stating that "Despite having strong performance thanks to iPhone sales, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has been aggressively helping its China-based smartphone clients such as Xiaomi, Meitu, Oppo and Meizu boost their sales and is looking to increase the revenue contribution from non-Apple players, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Since most of these vendors are mainly selling their smartphones domestically, helping them to sell their products to non-China markets has become a new business direction that Foxconn is looking to expand in the future, the sources noted.
If the China-based vendors are able to expand into overseas markets, the move would help Foxconn reduce its reliance on Apple's orders."
Whether Foxconn's latest moves are in retaliation for Apple spreading their iPhone orders to Pegatron last year or a recent dispute over iPhone production delays or the recent homicide over iPhone-6 security is unknown at this time.
