Androiders around the Globe Struggle with Timely OS Updates

10. News
As of today, 78% of Apple iPhone users have updated to the new iOS 7. And when there's an update or fix to be had, users easily get it when on iTunes charging up their devices. On Friday we reported on HTC's head designer being indicted for leaking trade secrets and in that we report we presented a ridiculously lengthy graphic from HTC illustrating the long and tedious maze that the Android OS goes through just to get OS updates to Android users. Today, a premier mobile industry news site in Canada has published a new report titled "The Anguish of Updates" wherein the author bemoans the snail-like pace of OS updates for users, especially outside the US.

Is Microsoft Considering a New 3D Mobile OS User Interface?

10. News
Microsoft once branded their mobile device user interface for use with Surface tables and Windows smartphones as "Metro." The concept is now in play and is based on moveable, resizable live tiles. It was meant to challenge Apple's iOS winning interface that is more App icon centric. Their plan never quite worked out for them as they first planned, and a new patent filing strongly suggests that they may actually be thinking of reinventing their mobile OS once again. Then again, one has to wonder if it's a real plan or just a corporate fantasy.

1. Cover - Samsung's Galaxy S4 Sales are turning out to be a Disaster
Yesterday we posted a report titled "Apple's iPhone Success Points to a Bad Q4 for Samsung," wherein we stated that Apple's iPhone scored a hat trick of key online retail sales victories in December that likely contributed to the estimates for Samsung Electronics' fourth quarter operating profit being revised downward by more than a billion dollars US. Today we learn that the Samsung's Galaxy S4 is one of the key burdens dragging Samsung's financials down. In fact, the Korean press describes it as shocking at just how bad the numbers are likely to be for Q4. Yet the news shouldn't really surprise anyone.

Christmas Online Stats are in: Apple's iOS Obliterated Android

10. News
Apple's iOS has scored a perfect hat trick against Google's Android this holiday season. It began with iOS destroying Android in the battle for Black Friday mobile shopping sales followed by its crushing victory on Cyber Monday. Today, IBM is reporting that Christmas Day sales show that Apple's iOS Obliterated Android. This is why developers flock to Apple's World Wide Developer Conferences annually to stay ahead of the game with the latest and greatest iOS upgrades. Even with a much smaller user base than Android worldwide, it's a proven fact that Apple's iOS iDevices are purchased by a distinguished and advanced customer base. It's a fact that continually puts more profits into developers' hands than Android hands down.

LG and Samsung Race to Follow Apple's Touch ID in 2014

10. News
At Samsung's big smartphone event held in September prior to Apple's iPhone 5S event, they were to introduce a fingerprint scanner feature to beat Apple to market with a biometric security feature. The anticipation was high and yet in the end Samsung failed to deliver this forecasted feature. A month later they pathetically blamed US firm Validity for their failure to deliver a fingerprint scanning feature on time. Then a rumor surfaced that Samsung was testing a Retina Scanner for their next generation biometric security solution which was supported by a Samsung patent filing that surfaced a month later. In December we followed up with a report titled "Smartphone Players are scrambling to Adopt Fingerprint ID." The report covered a forecast by Sweden's Fingerprint Cards that fingerprint scanners would surface on Android phones in 2014. Today, it's being reported that LG Electronics is testing a prototype for its next flagship smartphone G3, equipped with fingerprint recognition technology.

Samsung Set to Attack the iPhone 5C Aggressively in China and India in 2014

10. News
Earlier this month we reported that Counterpoint's Monthly Market Pulse published a report showing that Apple's iPhone 5S was the number one selling smartphone in the world for October. Adding to Apple's lead, the iPhone 5 took the number two spot which proved to be more popular than Samsung's Galaxy S4 which came in the number three spot. Apple's iPhone 5C, which most thought wasn't going to sell well at all, actually came in fourth ahead of Samsung's popular Galaxy Note 3. With that track record, Samsung is changing course for 2014 and aims to conquer the mid-range smartphone market by creating cheaper units. It's a move to protect Samsung's "volume" sales game against the rising tied of local smartphone brands in China as well as the iPhone 5C which is going to get a lot more traction due to the new Apple-China Mobile partnership. The move is going to hurt their profit margins without knowing if the strategy will even pan out.

Apple Granted 23 Patents Today Including an Embedded Heart Rate Monitor that could be integrated into a future iWatch

1. Apple granted 23 patents including embedded heart rate monitor
The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 23 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today. In this particular report we cover five design patents that were granted to Apple today in addtion to focusing on one key invention relating to an embedded heart rate monitor. The invention states that beyond it being embedded into a future iPhone, the heart rate monitor could be embedded into an accessory. Earlier this year Apple's CEO and other team members were spotted wearing Nike's Fuel band. This led to speculation that Apple's newly published wristband computer invention (that is popularly thought of as a future wearable computer or iWatch) would be an ideal device for embedding a health monitoring system. That makes this granted patent a possible key component of any such future device.

Are Apple & Samsung Aiming Larger Tablets for the same Market?

60. Rumor
As far back as May of this year we reported on the rumor of Apple considering a larger 12.9 inch iPad for the educational market with the rumor resurfacing in August and again in October. Today, DigiTimes is once again hearing rumbles in Apple's supply chain about this larger iPad. Yet the timing of the unit for Q4 2014 doesn't really make much sense if it's truly for the "educational market" which is the angle that the unit is always being framed within. Perhaps the rumors are getting confused with Samsung's intentions.

Motorola Rushes Patent Filing for Ugliest Smartwatch

1. Cover, Moto patent figures 6 & 7
When Apple introduced their iPhone in 2007, it was the beginning of the end for cell phone leaders of that day such as Motorola, Nokia and BlackBerry. In 2011 Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop warned his staff "we are standing on a burning platform," and announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft days later to compete with Apple's iOS and Android smartphones. BlackBerry is still in free fall and Google had to rescue Motorola. In October, The Verge posted a report titled "How long will Google keep burning money on Motorola?" Apple's iPhone changed the rules of what a smartphone was and the likes of Motorola couldn't turn their ship around quick enough to save the day as an independent company. Motorola under Google has to ensure they'll stay on top of new trends this time around and so they rushed a smartphone patent to the US Patent Office last year to do just that. But there's a saying in IT circles known as "garbage in garbage out." In this instance, the saying can easily be extended through to hardware and Motorola's vision for a smartwatch as you'll see in their patent graphic found in our report. Our cover graphic is just the beginning of this mess.

Mobile Speed Relief is Close to a Decade Away

10. News
Some days I just shake my head at how slow my iPhone is when searching the net. Not that there's a much faster smartphone out there, it's just the standard LTE network isn't as fast as I'd like it be. Will the next generation Advance-LTE on Apple's next iPhone 6 really matter? No, not really. So when can we expect to see a real change in mobile surfing speeds? In Korea, 5G is scheduled to roll out in about 6 or 7 years. That will roughly translate into a decade before it reaches our shores unless by some miracle a new technology emerges from the tech heads in California. The big deal about 5G is that it's 1,000 times faster than today's current LTE. And the finer details behind the technology are even more impressive.

Yet with Apple being involved in so many patent infringement cases with Samsung of late for key features covering the iPhone, it's possible that Apple's latest patent win for resizing objects could come into play in the future and that's why we've highlighted this granted patent today in our report. While the method may seem "obvious" today, it wasn't back in time when iDevices first introduced it. Will it be cause for litigation in the future? Only time will tell.

In this particular report we focus on a possible revolutionary next generation computer that Apple describes as an entirely new category of computer based on projection. Apple's patent application first surfaced in 2010 and Patently Apple was first to cover it. Apple has illustrated an interest in projection systems over the years with most of them being a bit of a mystery. One describes a wild projection system that utilizes a 3D interactive space. Another describes an advanced 3D holographic projection display. We recently learned that Apple's Tel Aviv research center is reportedly working on sensing technologies specializing in three - dimensional analysis of body and facial movements and conversion of computer activity when they acquired PrimeSense last month. The Cordless Home is now in Reach with Magnetic Resonance

1AA. Magnetic Resonance Wireless Charging Coming to Market
The wireless power transmission technique known as magnetic resonance was widely known by a paper published in 2007 by Prof. Marin Soljacic of MIT. Unlike the magnetic induction method that was invented 100 years ago, it has no restriction in distance. So you could charge devices without the need of a charging board of any kind. It's this attribute that it has been attracting popular attention as the next-generation wireless power transmission technique. One of the first wireless charging patents designed for the PC using a magnetic resonance system was Apple's November 2012 patent application which was granted earlier this month. Earlier in September we reported on a new more detailed patent filing from Apple on this very technology. We noted as far back as February that Apple and Samsung were in a race to be first with a next generation wireless charging system and last month we reported on Samsung's latest move on this front with a 3D orientation-free wireless power transfer patent. Samsung and Qualcomm will likely be first to bring magnetic resonance solutions to smartphones in in late 2014 or early 2015, though Apple could always surprise us on this front. Now a new report suggests that magnetic resonance technology could lead to the cordless home over the next 3-5 years.

TSMC Ramping up to Supply Apple with 20nm Chips in 2014

News out of Taipei today states that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) announced yesterday that it's to start high-volume production of its most advanced 20-nanometer (nm) chips next month. The move would make TSMC the world's leading contract chipmaker supplying 20nm chips. Analysts say that mass 20nm chip production could put TSMC in a position to dethrone Samsung as the supplier of Apple's next-generation A8 chip next year. The only question remaining is whether Apple's iPhone 6 will use TSMC's 20nm or upcoming 16nm chip which begins production late this year.
