Samsung's Galaxy Gear Sales Now Prove it's an Epic Flop
In early October we reported that "Samsung's Smartwatch Seen as a "Human Interface Train Wreck." We also reported a month earlier that "there was nothing there that was likely to compel many to actually buy it. It's bulky and delivers little to nothing in real value. I'm sure that Samsung thinks that this is a 'breakthrough' product, but it's just a super-charged wrist watch that's ugly." Well, we correctly called it out of the starting gate because a new Korea report published today claims that sales of Samsung's Galaxy Gear have proven to be a flop of epic proportions. Samsung's big move to prove that they're an "innovator" equal to Apple has ultimately failed as expected. Report Udated November 20, 2013 8:40 MST
The Korean report stated that "Samsung Electronics' latest advancements in technology, the Galaxy Round smartphone and the Galaxy Gear watch, have failed to gain the attention of domestic customers."
The report further states that the "product has cumulative sales under 50,000, with daily sales of only 800-900 units. These low sales values for the Galaxy Gear are far below the initial expectations of the industry."
And on another note, the new Samsung Galaxy Round, the ever so slightly curved display based Galaxy smartphone is embarrassingly selling at the daily rate of under 100 units. Its cumulative monthly sales will fall under the 10,000 units that were initially estimated.
Another Samsung gimmick bites the dust.
Update November 20, 2013: On Tuesday Korean media reported Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch had only sold 50,000 units since its launch earlier this year as we reported. Quickly thereafter Samsung rebuffed the number with company officials claiming in an interview with Reuters that it had actually sold 800,000 of its smartwatches.
Now it appears that Samsung wasn’t being entirely truthful with Reuters. Oh so surprising (as I choke with laughter).
The Verge later updated their recent report by stating that "Although Reuters reports the figure represents sales, Korean publication Yonhap claims Samsung is referring to shipments to retailers. Samsung Korea has confirmed in an email to The Verge that the figure relates to shipments as originally reported by Yonhap."
In the end, we got the story right. Samsung's smartwatch is an epic flop.
