Apple Files Four Trademark Applications for "iBeacon" Supporting Future iWallet Services

Today the US Patent & Trademark Office published four of Apple's latest trademark filings for "iBeacon." iBeacon is an Indoor positioning system that Apple calls "a new class of low-powered, low-cost transmitters that can notify nearby iOS 7 devices of their presence" According to tech guru Steve Cheney, "Apple's push into iBeacon could enable it to run away in this market while still standardizing on a completely open platform and developer environment." Cheney also notes that iBeacon is currently in every single iPhone dating back two years. In addition to indoor positioning, Apple's trademark filings for iBeacon reveal a direct connection to future iWallet financial services.

Apple filed trademark application 86111036 under International Class 036 which specifically covers "Financial services; bill payment services; debit and credit card services; electronic payment services."


Apple filed trademark application 86111020 under International Class 038 which specifically covers "Telecommunication services; transmission of data and of information by electronic means; providing access to online searchable databases of text, data, image, audio, video, and multimedia content."


Apple filed trademark application 86111020 under International Class 035 which specifically covers "Business management; data processing services; advertising agency services; advertising, marketing, and promotion services; advertising and marketing consultation; sales promotion services; promoting the goods and services of others; conducting market research; analysis of advertising response and market research; design, creation, preparation, production, and dissemination of advertisements and advertising material for others; media planning services; administration of consumer loyalty programs; arranging and conducting incentive rewards programs to promote the sale of goods and services; providing business, consumer, and commercial information over computer networks and global communication networks; business services, namely, providing computer databases regarding the purchase and sale of a wide variety of products and services of others; retail store services; online retail store services provided via the Internet and other electronic and communications networks; arranging and conducting of commercial, trade, and business conferences, shows, and exhibitions; information, advisory and consultancy services relating to all the aforesaid."


Apple filed trademark application 86111020 under International Class 009 which specifically covers "Computers; computer peripheral devices; computer hardware; handheld digital electronic devices; digital format audio and video players; radios, radio transmitters, and receivers; car audio apparatus; audio components and accessories; network communication apparatus; electronic communication equipment and instruments; optical apparatus and instruments; telecommunications apparatus and instruments; global positioning system (GPS) devices; telephones; wireless communication devices for voice, data or image transmission; apparatus for data storage; computer software; couplers, cables, chargers, docks, docking stations, interfaces, and adapters for use with all of the aforesaid goods; computer equipment for use with all of the aforesaid goods."


Apple asserts a claim of priority based on Jamaica application numbers 62626 and 63543 filed on May 09, 2013.
