Apple Display Partner Reveals Quad HD Resolution for Smartphones

PA - Title Bar - News
In September we reported that Japan Display would land more than half of the iPhone 5C order from Apple and in a secondary report we pointed to Japan Display connected to display panel and touchscreen components for Apple's upcoming iPhones. While Japan Display has certainly taken a major role for iPhone displays, their next possible contribution to the iPhone could be a stunner if Apple gives them the green light.

A new report published today in Asia states that Japan Display has just finished their work on a 5.4 inch smartphone display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixel along with 543ppi. Apple's current iPhone 5S offers 640 x 1136 resolution with 326ppi. In perspective, the Galaxy S4 with a 5" display only offers 1920 x 1080 resolution with 441ppi

Japan Display's smartphone display is a TFT LCD screen and comes with a 1500:1 contrast ratio, along with 160 degree viewing angle. Japan Display has also revealed a 12 inch tablet sized 4K display as well as a 6.2 phablet with the same resolution as the 5.4 inch smartphone display.

Speculation is that the display might be available in late 2014 or mid 2015 at the latest. The report further speculates that Sony will get first dibs on these displays. However, why the report doesn't make a link to Apple possibly taking advantage of these new displays as a premium customer is odd.

The news of one of Apple's display partners debuting mind boggling high-end displays for smartphones possibly for late next year is certainly a development to keep on top of over the next year. Most rumors have pointed to a 4.7" iPhone 6 and it would appear that it could now be in the range between 4.7 and 5.4 inches if Apple can secure orders with Japan Display in time for next year.

If Apple could pull that off, it'll be quite the thrill to see 4K display quality coming to the iPhone 6 - though technically 2560 x 1440 is considered Quad HD. For now however, it's a wait-and-see development. Either 4K or Quad HD displays for mobile devices are likely to support the push for more live TV services in the future.

LG is another Apple display partner who introduced a Quad HD display in August and earlier in October, Sharp made an announcement about taking IGZO to the next level. A sharp spokesman stated that  by "Using 8G glass substrates, Sharp will be the first company in the world to achieve commercial production of high-definition LCD panels for smartphones." With most of Apple's display panel suppliers now preparing to produce higher end displays next year, the iPhone is bound to take Retina to another level.
