New Study: Apple's App Store Crushing Google Play in Revenue
A new study published by Distimo provides us with a granular app level look at revenues in the Apple App Store and Google Play. Distimo's report debunks some of the myths surrounding application level revenue in Google Play and the Apple App Store. One of those myths is that although the (free) download volumes in Google Play are impressive, developers still find it hard to monetize their apps on this platform compared to the Apple App Store. Distimo's latest report examines this statement by digging into the battle between Google Play and the Apple App Store.
All data mentioned in Distimo's report covers April 2013 and was collected directly from Distimo's AppIQ, which contains download and revenue estimations on a daily basis. Distimo presents data from a number of games sold in both Google Play and Apple's App Store and we present you with three of the examples found in their study.
The use of color coded maps by Distimo is captivating in that it makes it so easy to quickly see that Apple's App Store is clearly delivering sales for top game developers around the globe. In the real world, free games don't matter much to developers. In the end, where it really counts, The App Store delivers what matters to developers: profits.
1. World of Arms by Gameloft
2. Final Fantasy III by Square Enix
3. WhatsApp
The Apple App Store is Still Most Beneficial
According to Distimo, the daily revenue of applications in the top 200 grossing in the Apple App Store in the U.S. was $5.1M in April 2013. This is still 4.6 times higher than the 200 best performing applications in Google Play, which had daily revenue of $1.1M.
