Apple's new Fingerprint Sensor may be the Culprit Holding back the iPhone 5S
The iPhone 5S could be delayed until after June due to problems associated with Apple's new fingerprint-scanning feature designed by Apple to replace the passcode-based unlocking system on previous models. A supply chain source in Taiwan stated that Apple was trying to find a coating material that did not interfere with the fingerprint sensor, and this may be causing a delay.
In another aspect of the UK's Telegraph report, the rumor has resurfaced that Apple is developing a more economical iPhone model aimed at appealing to lower-income buyers in emerging markets such as China and India. We covered this rumor of a possible economical iPhone for emerging markets back in January.
Coincidentally, a new report published by ABI Research today states that Low-cost Smartphones will account for 46% of Smartphone Shipments by 2018—up from 28% in 2012. Apple's focus on the Indian market this year has already yielded fruit and a more aggressively focused smartphone aimed at this segment of the market could result in a dramatic rise in sales in the years ahead.
Whether Apple is going to actually address this segment of the market any time soon is unknown at this time.
