New "iBooks Author" Trademark & Logo Filings Surface from Apple

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office has published Apple's latest trademark filings for "iBooks Author." Apple announced their new iBooks Authoring application during a January special Apple Event unveiling iBooks 2 for the iPad. The new iBooks Authoring tool/application allows anyone to create and publish next generation online books. Apple's trademark filings cover for the name and logo's descriptive reference.

Apple's filing lists Vienna Code Descriptors that indicate that the logo is in fact in color, despite the fact that the supplied logo in the filing is only Black in White. The colors listed include red, pink, orange, blue, black, grey, silver and white. The colored version of the logo noted above was added from another source.

Under Services, Apple lists the following Class Details: Educational and entertainment services; sporting and cultural activities; computer-based and computer-assisted educational, teaching, and training services; digital imaging services; entertainment and educational services, namely, providing text, graphics, video, audio, and multimedia materials; entertainment services, namely, providing computer games; entertainment and educational services, namely, providing electronic books, magazines, newspapers, journals, periodicals, and other publications; entertainment and educational services, namely, providing information, databases, directories, and podcasts in the fields of entertainment, advertising, news, current events, history, sports, games, the media, cultural events and activities, hobbies, publications, technology, and other topics; entertainment and educational services, namely, live performances, sporting events, cultural events, and lectures; entertainment and education services, namely, organizing and conducting exhibitions, displays, exhibits, workshops, seminars, training, and conferences; information, advisory and consultancy services relating to all the aforesaid.

 

Apple also filed their trademark under the category of "Wares" which basically covers all of the important hardware that iBooks Author will work with, including computers, handhelds, tablets, MP3 players, PDA's, phones and much more. The full list was unreasonably long to list in our report.

 

Apple asserts a claim of priority based on Jamaican application number 59397, filed December, 08, 2011. Update Feb. 15, 2012: Apple has filed for the same trademark in Hong Kong, China under application 302159965. It was filed under International Classes 9 and 41.
