Apple Aggressively Files for Thunderbolt Trademark in Europe

1 - Apple Files for Thunderbolt Trademark in Europe - May 2011
On May 4, 2011, the European Trademark Office has published Apple's latest trademark filing for "Thunderbolt" under application 009935446. Apple is trying to legally establish that they're the owner of this trademark, as they filed for this trademark in Canada back in March of this year. The difference this time around is that we get to see the two International Classes that the trademark has been officially filed under which specifically covers Application Service Provider Services (ASP) and computer software and hardware without mention of a cell or smartphone. Of course, Apple could be simply hiding that tid bit under the "computer gaming machines" listing. Time will tell where Thunderbolt will show up next.

Apple's Trademark Application In-Part

Below is Apple's Trademark Application In-Part for Thunderbolt. It's still a little murky as to why Apple is attempting to lay claim to this trademark when Intel has already done so publically. Is there a dispute or showdown in the wind? Time will tell – but Apple is certainly acting aggressively with their trademark applications.

It should be noted that Apple has added Thunderbolt to their latest round of iMac's released yesterday. Also see our report titled "Apple Gains iPod Touch & Nano Design Wins in China" which was posted late yesterday afternoon.

Update May 20, 2011: Intel finally clarified their apparent trademark clash with Apple. Dave Salvator, Senior Communications Manager at Intel explained the trademark history with Bright Side of News (BSN) by stating the following: "As part of our collaboration with Apple, they did some of the initial trademark filings. Intel has full rights to the Thunderbolt trademark now and into the future..." I would have preferred to read that Apple made that statement, but it appears that Apple is transferring their applications to Intel, according to BSN. Time will tell if all goes well on that front.
