The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 54 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today. In this particular report we cover a single important patent that could very well come to life this year. We've noted several times that Apple's Phil Schiller stated that it's not "clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem." The method of sharing data using a digital handshake via NFC doesn't seem to impress Apple and this newly granted patent may very explain their reasoning. Apple's solution is vastly superior in terms of securing data while being transferred. Due to its built-in security features, we may very well see Apple implement this technology into their future iWallet application instead of or in addition to NFC.

On April 9, 2013, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a new granted patent from Apple that reveals a new feature that has yet to come to market. Apple has been razzed for a while now for not having a technology for the iPhone that is similar to Samsung's Beam that lets users share large files from one smartphone to another using NFC. Apple's newly granted patent provides such an interactions and so much more. Apple's solution works between a Mac and iPhone and provides editing software to crop, scale and adjust images. Apple had the technology mapped out in January 2010, or about 30 months prior to Samsung's public release of this feature for the Galaxy SIII.

Today's granted patent report covers an eclectic mix of technologies which includes multi-touch, the Mac mini and the apparatus that creates the Apple cut out logo on MacBooks and the iMac. Other granted patents cover a Macroscalar processor architecture and one that's a security based patent titled "Techniques for credential strength analysis via failed intruder access attempts." On March 12, 2013, the US Patent & Trademark Office granted Apple a patent relating to a data management system in context with a social networking service. Apple filed for this patent two months prior to launching iTunes Ping their social networking service for music. Two of Apple's engineers who worked on this project, namely Amol Pattekar and Andrew Vyrros, came to Apple via Yahoo! Whether this patent was solely for Ping or a secondary social networking service for the future is unknown at this time. Two unique attributes of the management system is its ability to identify and react to spammers and stalkers.
