Earlier this month Patently Apple posted a report titled "Apple Reportedly Signs on Second Apple Watch Supplier Compal to Crank Up Sales for Q4." The report noted that during Apple's last Quarter's Financial Conference Tim Cook stated "It was also our best quarter ever for Apple Watch. Both units and revenues with holiday demand so strong that we couldn't make enough. Apple Watch is the bestselling smartwatch in the world and also the most loved with higher customer satisfaction in its category by a wide margin." Apple's move to bring on Compal as a second supplier shows that they don't want to be short again during the holiday quarter. Today a second report has surfaced to confirm that Compal is indeed coming on board.
Today Digitimes reports today that "Compal Electronics has landed orders for Apple Watch, becoming a second OEM for the smart wearable device, according to Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
Compal will produce Apple Watch and Apple Watch Series 2 to account for 20-30% of total shipments initially and is setting up assembly capacity at its factory in Kunshan, eastern China. Compal will begin shipments as early as the fourth quarter of 2017. Quanta Computer is currently the sole OEM for Apple Watch, and Apple's move to add of Compal is to decrease Quanta's price bargaining power as well as increase total assembly capacity due to an optimistic sales outlook for the device, EDN indicated."
