According to a new IDC report, Phablets in the 5.5" to 7" range will grow from 14% of the market to almost one third of the market by 2018. IDC acknowledges that "With the expected entry of Apple into this market segment, and the pent-up demand for a larger screen iPhone, Apple has the ability to drive replacement cycles in mature markets despite the slower growth seen in recent quarters."
One statistic in IDC's new report that was a little surprising was that in 2014, they expect emerging market smartphone volume to grow to 920.8 million units accounting for 73.5% of all volume shipped.
The catalyst here continues to be Android devices, which are expected to account for 88.4% of this volume. IDC's outlook for emerging market smartphone volume is 1.4 billion units by 2018, growing to 79.5% of worldwide volume.
