On Friday Patently Apple posted a report about the European Parliament ruling that Apple and others would have to adopt the micro-USB standard by 2017. Barbara Weiler, a German socialist MEP and rapporteur on the dossier, made the announcement. Moments ago Patently Apple received a brief video interview with Barbara Weiler on this matter where she specifically mentions Apple. What will this mean for Apple? "Well, if they want to sell on the European market, they'll have to follow the European law," replied Weiler. The European commission will meet with industry leaders to discuss the directive, but admits that innovation could change in that time frame. This could be the perfect moment for Apple to put a final push on their wireless charging system. Could Apple's new solution be ready for 2017? Only time will tell.
My thanks goes out to Graham W for sending us his interview with rapporteur Barbara Weiler. It was filmed shortly before the official vote was cast on Friday. It would seem they knew that they had the votes in hand ahead of time.
